The Star Trek universe expanded in width and breadth on the silver screen. The original crew continues their adventures after the five-year mission in a successful run of six movies, released from 1979 to 1991. In the mid-2000s, director J.J. Abrams announced he would revive the franchise by casting new actors in the roles of Kirk, Spock, and company, in their Starfleet Academy days. The film is set for a May 8, 2009 release.
