The Time Trap

Many ships have disappeared into the mysterious Delta Triangle over the centuries. The Enterprise joins them in a continuum from which, they're told, there's no escape, and violence is forbidden.

Some wise decisions were made on this script: there's nothing crazy about the trap, but it does provide a puzzle to solve, or a trap from which to bust out. (Depending on whether you're Kirk or Spock.) Best line goes to Scotty as he declares that "There's ships here I've only seen crude drawings of!" while they pan over the crude drawings of unimaginative alien ships for the third time. An inside joke? Yikes. Many of our favorite TOS alien races have cameos on the Council. The head Vulcan seems also to be from Krypton, judging by his crest. We also see the only Klingon chick with an afro. Again, our crew rails against bureaucracy, but is indebted to the Council for enforcing peace. The cooperation/ sabotage plot is intelligent without being too complex for the kiddies, and Spock and McCoy's interaction is spot-on. A respectable episode.

Spock Saves the Day: Spock computes a (ridiculous looking) formula to escape the time trap, but also senses the others' ulterior motives.

Oops: McCoy says it's unlike Spock to "act like a pal." Indeed! Turns out its a clever ruse, but the shots of him draping his arms over the Klingons are unexpected and funny.

Developments: The mild telepathic powers are nothing new, but his acting chummy in order to touch the suspicious Klingons is certainly a leap. It's a wonder Kor isn't more curious about him. If this is the same character from Errand of Mercy he's softened considerably, or else the time warp effected his memory of the Vulcan merchant's capabilities.
