Shore Leave
The work-weary crew takes some time off for shore leave on an peaceful, idyllic planet, but this paradise turns deadly when the crew's most fanciful thoughts start becoming reality.
Fun for the Enterprise crew and viewers alike, since the odd and humourous moments work better than the "dangers." It's clear that McCoy won't really stay dead, because his departure is treated with no solemnity. Also, the tiger's chain can easily be seen, the airplanes are stock footage, and the samurai is silly. Kirk seems to prefer taking a pounding from his old classmate to romancing Ruth, but there's plenty of time for everything. In repeat viewings the twist ending is known, but this installment still contains mild amusements.
Spock Saves the Day: The first officer figures out why particular things are appearing and how to combat them.
Oops: You can't say "don't think of a tiger" without thinking of a tiger.
Developments: Spock's attitude towards rest is quite understandable. He'd like to conserve his energy at such times rather than expend it. He's also the only crewmember not to conjure up an object or creature of his own. Either he's indeed in control of his thoughts or simply no fun. Or perhaps his ideal vacation is a ship free of humans. Or rubbing Kirk's back. Hot.
