Friday's Child

Negotiations for a mining treaty with the people of Capella IV and the Klingons go awry, and Kirk and Co. find themselves on the run through the wilderness, with a pregnant woman in tow.

It starts well: a culture with unique customs, impending clash with the Klingons, political intrigue. But as soon as the new Tier takes over, that's it. Just another dull chase through the Vasquez Rocks. The silly fur and Spandex outfits of the natives are inappropriate for the climate, the tribal laws go from interesting to confusing, and the resolution is . . . not very clear. Redeeming this installment is the chemistry between Julie Newmar (!) and De Kelley, and McCoy makes his only delivery in TOS. The doctor goes from his crankiest ("I'm a doctor, not an escalator!") to most light-hearted. ("Oochy-woocy-coocy-coo!") The child's name - Leonard James - is also cute. Scotty's wild goose chase is tedious, and the time would be better spent developing Capellan culture or fleshing out the Klingon motivation. So many missed opportunities.

Spock Saves the Day: Spock aids in several escape attempts, creates a sonic disruption, builds some bows, and shoots arrows.

Oops: You'd think he would have learned to hold a baby, somehow.

Developments: Spock has perfect aim, and manages to knock off some extras with his rickety bows. Also, he doesn't seem to like kids much . . .
