Narrated by Doctor McCoy, this story chronicles the Federation's first encounter with the Cardassians, and also shows how Spock and Sarek once again became estranged. During a diplomatic summit, the Cardassians claim they want to form a trade alliance with the Federation, which Spock favours and Sarek opposes. Sarek has also recently married Perrin, which has Spock angry because she is only 25 - much too young to be marrying his father in his opinion. The Cardassian petition is really a trick to sabotage a fledgling alliance with a water-dwelling race known as the Legarans. And they kidnap Perrin. Spock and Sarek must set aside their differences to save her and stop the Cardassians.
