Biography
Spock is born in 2232 on Shi'Kahr, Vulcan to a human mother, Amanda Grayson, and a Vulcan father, Sarek. From his earliest years he feels the strain of his dual heritage. The Vulcan children tease him for being too human, yet any emotional response proves his inferiority. While devoted to discipline and logic, Spock shows sentiment towards his furry pet sehlat. His half-brother, Sybok, chooses instead to reject the path of logic and is exiled from Vulcan. At age 7, Spock is telepathically bonded to the young girl T'Pring, signifying a future marriage.
Despite his father's wishes that he attend the Vulcan Science Academy, Spock decides instead in 2249 to attend Starfleet Academy, perhaps in support of the Federation's cultural diversity. As one of the first Vulcans in Starfleet, working with him is a broadening experience for many officers. In 2252 he becomes as a cadet under Captain Christopher Pike on the U.S.S. Enterprise. By 2265 he has been promoted to commander and serves as science officer and second in command to the new captain, James T. Kirk.
Kirk's "five year mission" is eventful for Spock. Encounters with strange diseases and alien spores provoke him to reveal deep emotional conflicts, though to most of the crew he remains a stoic, detached commander. Some officers appreciate his efficiency, while others find him difficult to work with, none more so than Dr. McCoy. Yet the Enterprise averts disaster numerous times thanks to Spock's careful reasoning and quick action. Though he finds himself in many dangerous situations, Spock is only seriously threatened by neural parasites on the Deneva colony and a flintlock shot on a primitive M-class planet. In both cases his Vulcan physiology allows him to fully recover.
In 2267 Spock finds he must return to Vulcan, compelled by the pon farr or mating drive. There he must win T'Pring's hand in marriage. However, she proves a reluctant bride, and manipulates the ceremony so that Spock must fight his own captain to the death. Spock is the victor, but his friends prove a match to T'Pring's cunning, having faked Kirk's death. Spock cracks a rare smile at seeing "Jim" alive. Also in this year, Spock is reunited with his father, who is aboard ship for a diplomatic mission. After a period of tension they heal their 18-year rift, and Spock donates blood in an operation to save Sarek's life.
Three more years of adventure, discovery, and even a little romance follow. But in 2269, Spock finds he is not at peace, and retires from Starfleet to pursue the kohlinar discipline - to rid oneself of emotion - on Vulcan. The effort fails, however; he he is disturbed by presence of the V'Ger probe. After helping Kirk and the crew confront this crisis, he returns to Starfleet. By 2277 he has been promoted to captain and trains Academy cadets on the Enterprise.
In 2285 he joins Kirk once again in the rescue of the Project Genesis team and the defeat of Khan Noonien Singh: at the cost of his life. Seeing no alternative to repairing the damaged warp drive by hand, he enters a radiation-filled chamber and allows the ship to reach safety. Prior to entering, he places his hand on Dr. McCoy and says " Remember." A deeply saddened Kirk consigns the Vulcan's body to space.
The body lands on the Genesis planet, created by the explosion of the terraforming device. Its regenerative powers restore the Vulcan to life, though he must pass through childhood and adolescence before reaching maturity. His spirit - or katra - meanwhile, is in the care of the now-schizoid Dr. McCoy. After an intense struggle with both Starfleet and Klingon factions, his body and soul are reunited through the fal-tor-pan ritual on Vulcan's Mount Seleyah.
While regaining his knowledge and memories, Spock comes up against the problem that has always plagued him: the conflict between his emotional human nature and his Vulcan training in logic. As he journeys to the 20th century with Kirk on a crucial mission, he can observe "crude" humanity first-hand. On returning to his own time he continues to behave in a Vulcan manner but admits to having feelings and displays emotions when it seems - well, logical. He also nobly stands on trial with his shipmates for actions taken during his rescue.
Spock encounters a figure from the past in 2292, his brother Sybok. Now a fanatical cult leader, Sybok uses his Vulcan abilities to rid followers of painful memories. He takes over the Enterprise on a quest for God, though his plans go wildly awry. In a final redeeming act, Sybok gives his life to save his brother the crew from a vengeful super being.
In 2293 Spock finds himself following in his father's footsteps as a diplomat. He is special envoy to the Klingon Empire and unravels a conspiracy involving his own protégé, Lt. Valeris. He also works towards the unification of Vulcan and the Romulan homewords, facts uncovered by Captain Jean-Luc Picard in 2368. A mind-meld with Picard (who had previously melded with Sarek) allows Spock to experience his father's long-guarded love for him.
These later years remain mysterious, though it is known that Spock had married and continues his work on Romulus, undercover. In 2387, Spock learns of Romulus's impending destruction due to the supernova of a nearby star. Working with top scientists, he finds a means of saving Romulus, but he is too late. The vehicle he is piloting is sucked into a black hole and sent back in time, to 2258, as well as an alternate timeline. There he watches the destruction of Vulcan by the Romulan Nero, another time-traveller who blames Spock for the destruction of Romulus. Spock encounters a young Kirk and imparts the wisdom needed to save the day, and to form a friendship with young Spock. The Vulcan later confronts his younger self and wishes him luck.
Spock remains in the alterate past to form a Vulcan colony, taking on the roles his parents held, both ambassador and teacher. He has much to share with those Vulcans who remain, guiding them towards the sense of balance and peace he has found within himself.
